Chère lectrice, cher lecteur,

Que diriez-vous de ne mettre que des informations réjouissantes dans les premières aidsfocus.nouvelles 2006? Des informations qui motivent? Une entreprise pas vraiment facile. Car la plupart des nouvelles qui arrivent sur mon ordinateur via différentes newsletters électroniques donnent un tableau plutôt sombre de l’ampleur et des conséquences de l’épidémie mondiale de VIH/sida.

Pourtant, elles existent bel et bien, les histoires – petites ou grandes – qui ravivent, entretiennent ou fortifient l’espoir. L’accord que la Clinton Foundation est parvenu à négocier avec certaines entreprises pharmaceutiques pour diminuer drastiquement le prix des médicaments antisida et réduire de moitié le prix des tests VIH, représente un modeste – et néanmoins important – pas en avant. Réjouissante également, cette nouvelle du Zimbabwe selon laquelle le taux d’infection chez les femmes enceintes et la population adolescente a pu être légèrement abaissé. Et nous partageons la joie de Beatrice Were, fondatrice de la NACWOLA en Ouganda, qui a été l’une des premières femmes à annoncer publiquement sa séropositivité et qui vient d’obtenir de la Human Rights Watch la plus haute reconnaissance pour son courage et son engagement inlassable.

Même de sombres événements peuvent avoir de bons côtés. Ainsi, une collection de photos-portraits intitulée «Voices of hope» permet à des personnes d’Afrique, d’Asie, d’Europe et d’Amérique latine de s’exprimer – des personnes qui vivent avec le virus et qui sont pourtant pleines d’énergie, de courage et d’espoir.

Last but not least, aidsfocus.ch poursuit son développement. Deux nouvelles organisations ont rejoint le cercle de nos partenaires: Interteam et la Fédération intrnationale de la Croix-Bleue.

Seit 1998 engagiert sich INTERTEAM in der Aus- und Weiterbildung von lokalen Mitarbeitern und Mitarbeiterinnen von Catholic AIDS Action, der grössten Nichtregierungsorganisation im Aidsbereich in Namibia. 2003 eröffnete Catholic AIDS Action in Oshakati eines der drei ersten Zentren für freiwillige HIV-Beratung und Tests (Voluntary Counselling and Testing VCT) Namibias. Interteam stellte dem dortigen Team eine Beraterin zur Seite. Es war das einzige VCT-Angebot ausserhalb der Hauptstadt, 700 km von Windhoek entfernt im ehemaligen Homeland der Owambos, und man fragte sich, ob die Menschen den Mut aufbringen würden, sich hier persönlich beraten und testen zu lassen.

Die Zahlen jedoch sprechen eine deutliche Sprache: Mehr als 12 Prozent der ansässigen Bevölkerung haben sich in Oshakati bis heute auf HIV testen und beraten lassen. Ein so hohes Resultat erreichte kein anderes der heute 16 VCT-Zentren in Namibia. Massgeblich an diesem Erfolg beteiligt waren die lokalen Freiwilligen von Catholic AIDS Action. Sie waren von Anfang an ins Projekt eingebunden, informierten die Menschen in ihren jeweiligen Dörfern über das neue Beratungs- und Testzentrum, begleiteten KlientInnen persönlich zur Beratungs- und Teststelle und klärten sie über die Vor- und Nachteile einer Präventionsberatung wie auch des HIV-Tests auf.

Zusammen mit der HIV-Selbsthilfegruppe wurden über die Freiwilligen auch Versammlungen in den Dörfern veranstaltet, wo HIV-positive Menschen über ihre Erfahrungen mit der Krankheit erzählen konnten. Mit der Einführung der staatlichen Abgabe von Aidsmedikamenten im Jahre 2004 begannen die Freiwilligen, zusätzlich über die Vor- und Nachteile dieser Medikamente zu informieren. Viele Freiwillige der Catholic AIDS Action wurden später zu sogenannten "treatment supporters", zu Bezugspersonen, die HIV-positive Menschen bei der korrekten Einnahme der Medikamente unterstützen.

Das VCT-Zentrum Oshakati wurde so zu einem echten "Eingangstor" sowohl zur HIV-Prävention wie auch zur Behandlung. Lebten im Jahr 2002 30 Prozent der Bevölkerung im Owambo mit dem Virus, so sind es heute noch 28 Prozent. Das ist noch immer eine unglaublich hohe Zahl und doch ein deutliches Hoffnungszeichen!

INTERTEAM ist eine Organisation der schweizerischen Entwicklungszusammenarbeit. Seit 1964 vermittelt und begleitet INTERTEAM freiwillige Fachleute in Einsätze nach Afrika, Lateinamerika und Papua Neuguinea. INTERTEAM arbeitet in den jeweiligen Ländern eng mit lokalen Partnern und dem Ministerium für Gesundheit zusammen und engagiert sich im Aufbau nationaler HIV/Aidsprogramme zur Verhinderung neuer Ansteckungen, in der Betreuung HIV-positiver Menschen, in der Unterstützung von Aidswaisen und in der Bewusstseinarbeit über die Aidsproblematik in der Bevölkerung.

La Croix Bleue est une organisation chrétienne, fondée à Genève en 1877 et active dans près de 40 pays. La Fédération Internationale de la Croix-Bleue unit les sociétés nationales dans un effort commun de solidarité et d'entraide, informe ses membres par un service d'information semestriel et soutient des campagnes d'information. Elle participe à des projets en collaboration avec des institutions nationales et aide au travail de prévention et de prise en charge des alcooliques dans les pays du Tiers Monde. VIH/sida, la pauvreté et l’alcool est un des ses topiques.

Après une phase constitutive, en 2003, la Plate-forme s’est développée en 2004 et 2005 pour devenir une «Community of Practice (CoP)» active sur la thématique «VIH/sida et coopération internationale ». Aujourd’hui, aidsfocus.ch est considérée comme «the Swiss reference for the topic». aidsfocus.ch vit à la fois de la participation active des personnes et organisations partenaires à des tâches communes, et de nombreuses rencontres et réunions informelles et décentralisées lors desquelles différents partenaires s’échangent informations et expériences et collaborent à des tâches concrètes.

"Hier bekommen Sie keine Medikamente - wenn Sie aidskrank sind und in Afrika leben". So provokativ könnte Sie ein Kleber an einer Apothekentüre im März/April 2006 auf die ökumenische Kampagne von Brot für alle/Fastenopfer hinweisen. Das Recht auf Gesundheit ist gerade im Zusammenhang mit Aids nicht gewährleistet. HIV/Aids ist eines der von Fastenopfer und Brot für alle getragenen Kampagne "Wir glauben. Menschenrechte fordern Einsatz." Handlungsmöglichkeiten sind eine Briefaktion an Pharmafirmen oder die Möglichkeit Fachpersonen zum Thema zu begegnen. Mehr zur Kampagne:

Pas de R et D pour des outils liés au VIH/sida en contexte de pauvreté. Par exemple, le dépistage du VIH chez les enfants nécessite aujourd’hui une technologie exigeant de très nombreuses ressources. Par conséquent, peu d’enfants séropositifs reçoivent des traitements destinés à prolonger la vie et la moitié meurent avant l’âge de deux ans.

New York 13.01.2006 - A foundation run by former United States of America President Bill Clinton has negotiated a deal that will cut the cost of HIV tests and Aids treatment in developing countries. Mr Clinton said hundreds of thousands of lives could be saved as a result of the agreement with several drugs firms, which he said was only a "first step". Under the deal, the tests will be made available at half price and the cost of the drugs will be lowered by a third. The agreement between the Clinton Foundation and a handful of small drugs firms should mean up to a million people receive cheaper treatment by the end of the year.

Almost a month after the deadline, the World Health Organisation's (WHO) campaign to put three million people in the developing world on anti-AIDS drugs by the end of 2005 has failed to meet its target. But activists acknowledged that it did at least represent a goal to work towards, especially since, in Africa, fewer than 30,000 people were on antiretroviral (ARV) medication in 2001. Dr Eric Goemaere, head of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) in South Africa noted, "It's good to have an ambitious target. People are under pressure to move - and things are moving, and moving fast."

Despite serious economic and political challenges, Zimbabwe has become only the second country in sub-Saharan Africa to significantly slow the spread of HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS. In a brief press statement on 10 October, the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) announced that infection rates among a particularly vulnerable group - pregnant women - declined from 24.6 per cent in 2002 to 21.3 per cent in 2004.

Human Rights Watch gave its highest recognition to Beatrice Were, a leading advocate for the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda. Ms. Were was one of the first Ugandans ever to declare her HIV-positive status publicly. She is a founder of the National Community of Women Living with AIDS (NACWOLA) and she has defended the rights of people living with AIDS against controversial shifts in the country's AIDS policy, including the recent adoption of U.S.-funded "abstinence-until-marriage" programs. "Beatrice Were is the human face of AIDS in Uganda," said Jonathan Cohen of Human Rights Watch. "She has transformed her personal struggle with AIDS into a courageous and inspiring brand of activism."

The World Health Organisation WHO publishes the results of its online survey, "How healthy is your world?", in which visitors of its web site told what they thought were the most important health issues of 2005. Amongst the top health concerns were avian influenza, HIV/AIDS and tobacco control. The survey also includes comments from prominent public figures.

Ordinary lives, extraordinary stories: WHO, in collaboration with the International HIV/AIDS Alliance and Christian Aid, presents photo stories of people living with HIV and AIDS in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. "These stories are full of compassion and courage and explain why and how, ordinary people can make a difference. “They show why more support needs to be channelled to community responses. They show people making a huge difference with very little support, and help us all understand what works in each community. They are the living proof that it can be done.”

The new AIDS and Human Resources report by Medicus Mundi International (MMI) attempts to point to possible new accents of the complex issue of HIV/AIDS and Human Resources. It presents many questions: What is AIDS doing to populations and society? What is AIDS doing to the health workforce? How can the health workforce cope with new financing mechanisms and the resulting increased funding? What is the health workforce’s role in tackling AIDS? The report stresses the point that, given the complexity of the underlying social root issues of both AIDS and the health workforce, different viewpoints and perspectives are necessary. When we look at agriculture from the perspective of human health, it becomes clear that those living in developing countries face a double burden of health hazards. Hunger is a well-known and very serious problem, and poor nutrition is becoming more and more widespread. Poor health, caused by malnourishment, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis or malaria is causing huge problems in food production.

Zurich, Basel, Bern, Fribourg, Geneve, Neuchâtel | Un film de la cinéaste cubaine, Belkis Vega. Le film pose la question de la maladie VIH/Sida dans son contexte cubain. Son but est de réveiller la compréhension pour les personnes infectées du VIH ou malade du Sida, des personnes qui ont la vie devant elles et le droit de la vivre ! Trois femmes et deux hommes vivant à Cuba racontent leur vie et les moments clés qui sont associés à leur maladie. Le film, un documentaire, utilise des éléments dramaturgiques et artistiques. La technique du « teatro espontaneo » est mise en scène par des actrices et acteurs professionnels qui font ainsi revivre les différentes étapes de leur vie.

Bern | HIV/AIDS prevention and life-perspectives - with a special focus on youth will be the topic of the upcoming aidsfocus.ch conference 2005. Information on and awareness of HIV/AIDS is important, but not enough to change the behaviour of individuals and groups and/or to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. Prevention - the decision to protect one-self and others and to adopt a responsible behaviour - is part of a life-concept and linked to life-perspectives at the individual and the socio-economic level. This is especially important for young people who represent and shape the future. The program will be available soon on the aidsfocus.ch website.
