ELECTORNIC BULLETIN OF THE SWISS PLATFORM ON HIV/AIDS AND INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

THE ELECTRONIC BULLETIN OF THE SWISS PLATFORM FOR HIV/AIDS AND INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION Mai 2004

Dear Reader,

The aidsfocus conference "Living with HIV/AIDS" on April 20, 2004, succeeded in making the access to the lifesaving aids treatments an issue of public debate, and to reflect on the role of one's own organisation in the context of comprehensive treatment and care. The documentation of the conference is now online. The reader of the conference will include additional aspects such as equity, gender, patents and prices as well as additional experiences of Swiss NGOs and will be published in June 2004 (MMS Bulletin Nr. 93).

Now that the conference is over, the challenge is to sustaini the energy created. aidsfocus.ch will support this process with a working group that includes experts and programme officers of organisations that themselves implement antiretroviral therapies as part of their programme or intent to start with therapies in the near future. The purpose of the working group is to discuss concrete issues and challenges of antiretrovial treatment and to share information and experiences in order to act in an effective and responsible way on the ground.

The large majority of NGOs will take a supportive role, be it by strengthening local health systems and capacity building or be it by providing psychosocial or socioeconomic support to people living with HIV/AIDS or people affected by it. aidsfocus.ch will serve as a platform for sharing of information and experiences and take up initiatives. A good example is "Memory Work" in order to support of children affected by HIV/AIDS, but also to support and accompany women and men with HIV/AIDS who go for treatment or are preparing for it.

NEWS AND EVENTS

DOCUMENTATION OF THE AIDSFOCUS CONFERENCE. NOW ONLINE!

The first aidsfocus conference “Living with HIV/AIDS. Treatment and Care for All” that took place in Berne on April 20, 2004, was a successful and inspiring event. It succeeded in making the demand for comprehensive treatment and care for all, including antiretroviral therapy, an issue of public debate. More than 80 persons from Swiss NGOs, development organisations, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) participated at the conference. Six guest speakers from Switzerland and Africa presented a wealth of information and experience on AIDS treatment and care in resource poor settings in the South and East. In lively group discussions, the participants reflected not only on the challenges ahead, but also identified options and activities for their own organisations in promoting comprehensive treatment and care for all and expressed their personal commitment for further action.
