FOCUS ON HIV and AIDS II/2009, 1 December
This FOCUS ON HIV and AIDS - the electronic medium of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (sdc) on HIV and AIDS – takes up the theme of the 2009 World AIDS Day “Universal Access and Human Rights”. The theme offers the possibility and opportunity to stress again that access to HIV prevention, treatment and care is a human right and that it is impossible to decouple human rights issues from the discussion of how we tackle HIV and AIDS today and in the future. It makes clear that the relation between human rights violations and HIV infection rates, stigma and discrimination, but also gender inequality, violence against women, denial of HIV information and education especially for young people, the failure to protect orphans and assist caregivers and the criminalization of HIV transmission all create barriers to universal access to prevention, treatment and care.
