Living and working in contexts impacted by HIV and AIDS

Biel | cinfo: HIV and AIDS are a sad reality in a number of countries involved in International Cooperation (IC). It affects not only every aspect of the lives of the people concerned, but also considerably impacts the life and work of IC expatriate personnel. This seminar has the objective of working with participants so that they can better manage this challenge.

Intended audience:
• Those working in International Cooperation organizations
• Their accompanying partners

Objectives of the seminar:
Participants will:
• explore various levels of impact which the epidemic of HIV and AIDS can have on the life and the work of expatriate personnel
• consider various social and professional situations linked to HIV and AIDS that they may need to address
• explore strategies that might help to effectively manage the challenges at personal, institutional, and intercultural levels

Contents:
Impact of HIV and AIDS on personal life:
• coping with HIV and AIDS-related illness and the death of friends, neighbours and colleagues
• putting in place systems of protection for managing the stress connected to HIV / AIDS

Impact of HIV and AIDS on professional life, in the following areas:
• programme planning and fi nancial decision-making
• management of the staff, the project, and the programme
• relations within the team

HIV, AIDS and intercultural communication:
• How can we talk about HIV and AIDS in ways appropriate to the local culture?
• What is taboo?
• How can we manage the «silence» which surrounds HIV and AIDS?
